PVT Erdman was inducted into the Army on Dec. 23, 1943, and upon completion of basic and advanced training at Fort Knox, Ky., Camp Campbell, Ky., and Fort Meade, Md., left for overseas service in July 1944. After an additional month of instruction in England, he joined Allied armies in Holland. He was killed in action there one month later while participating in battle with an armored division of the 23rd infantry.
