82nd Airborne Pathfinder Normandy Plane 12.

Private First-Class Leslie Dean Fries, born 2 Sep 1920, was the son of Owen Henry Fries and Hazel Clara (Vinall) Fries of Bay City, Tillamook County, Oregon. Bay City is on Tillamook Bay at the coast 81 miles due west of Portland.
In the 1930 census 9-year-old Leslie is living with his parents and brothers Edwin 21, and Harold 6, on Idaville Road in Kilchis Precinct of Tillamook County. His father is the caretaker at a lumberyard. His mother is a saleslady in a general merchandise store and his bother Edwin is a laborer at a lumber mill.
In the 1940 census 19-year-old Leslie is a hired hand living on the farm of Ernest Pallin in Carnahan, Tillamook County.
On his 1940 draft registration Leslie is working at Coats Shingle Mill in Tillamook.
Leslie's father died 21 Apr 1940 at the age of 64.
Leslie enlisted 20 Sep 1940 in Tillamook. He'd had three years of high school and was single without dependents. His civilian occupation was listed under architect. He was assigned to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Leslie's mother died 23 Mar 1942 at the age of 53.
In a report dated 22 Jun 1944 Leslie was listed as a prisoner of war under German control at the Rennes Military Hospital. He must have been wounded and captured sometime in the first two weeks after D-Day.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Oregon show Fries, Leslie D, Pfc from Tillamook County as DOW (Died of Wounds) 15 Sep 1944. Leslie died as a prisoner of war under German control. Since he died of wounds, we don't know the exact date and therefore the approximate place he was mortally wounded.
Leslie's US WWII Hospital Admission Card File says he was killed by a bullet to the chest.
Military Branch: Infantry, Parachute Troops or Units. Diagnosis: First Location: Thorax, thoracic wall: Interscapular region; Second Diagnosis: Empyema (not post traumatic) or Empyema; Second Location: Posterior thoracic wall; Causative Agent: Bullet, Rifle. Type of Injury: Casualty, battle. Medical Treatment: Thoracotomy, exploratory (opening of chest cavity). Injured in Line of Duty: In line of duty. Type of Discharge: Died. Length of service: 3 Year(s), 5 Month(s). Service Number: 39310530
I suspect that the reason he's buried in England is soldiers that died under German control were likely taken to England for autopsy.
Since his parents were both dead the Headstone Inscription and Interment Record was sent to his brother Edwin in Otis, Lincoln County, Oregon.
