Mr. Day was the only child of Flora (Thomas) and Pearl Cleveland Day. His father, however, had four children from a previous marriage.
He married his first wife, Juanda Woffard, on April 16, 1924 at El Cerito, California, and a year later, on April 7, 1925, their son, Gilbert, was born at Los Angeles, California. They divorced around 1930. Between 1935 and 1940, Mr. Day married Dorothy M. (??)

The Liberty Ship Jesse E. Metcalf was anchored at Swansea, Wales on March 1, 1946. The ship's Master was Thomas Phillmore Day, a seasoned Mariner with over 25 years of sea service to his credit. He was 45 years old. On the day in question, Captain Day accidentally fell from the gangway ladder as he was boarding the ship, fracturing the base of his skull. He was taken to Morriston Emergency Hospital at Swansea where he died as a result of shock due to the injury.
