According to family records, Dr. Samuel Harrell was the 7th son of a 7th son (parents Judge Wick "JW" Harrell & Lodema Ann (Drake) Harrell.

He and his brothers, Madison and Charles, left the family farm and put themselves through medical school. Samuel received his MD from the University of Michigan and later undertook post graduate studies in Surgery, Gynecology and Internal Medicine Ailgememe at the Krankan Haus Vienna Hospital in Austria. After graduate school, he and his brother Madison, settled in Noblesville, Indiana, where they built the first hospital in Hamilton County in 1907-1908 (opened, May 1908), known as the Harrell Hospital And Sanatorium (now known as Riverview Hospital). He was known to quote, "The Bible says "Thou shalt heal the sick."

In 1894, Dr. Sam Harrell married
Vivian Venus Voss, daughter of Mary Alice Miesse & William Allen Voss. They lived in a log cabin until they build a beautiful house(known as The Harrell House & on the Historic Register in Noblesville, Indiana). This house was actually used to receive patients & prob. served also as a hospital. Dr. Sam Harrell performed one of the first apedectomies in Indiana and according to his son, Samuel Runnels Harrell, Dr. Harrell had performed at least three operations (2 successful) before the first person credited by this feat in the newspapers. Riverview Hospital was perhaps the first hospital in Indiana and there is now a Harrell Foundation dedicated to these Harrell brothers.

Sam and Vivian had three sons,
Voss, Samuel Runnels and Maurice Ticer Harrell.
