Runnels was an attorney and later president of Early & Daniel Company, as well as the Acme-Evans Company, known for it's EZ-Bake flour.
Acme-Evans Company's flour mill is still the oldest continuously operated enterprise in Indiana. The mill traces its origins to a grist mill that was established in 1821 to the SW of the Acme-Evans location.
Samuel Runnels Harrell ran for Governor of the State of Indiana at the age of 54, and he also ran for Lieutenant Governor as a fiscal coservative Republican, who stressed the need for balanced budgets.
He and wife Mary Evans were civic oriented and supported many worthwhile causes. One time they entertained a group of South American ambassadors.
