Son of Mr. Nina R. Studer who resided in Port Ewin, New York.

William served as a Second Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-17F #42-30121, 414th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Ulster County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 8, 1941 in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

William was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 hit some oil drums & exploded while taking off from the Air base at Oudna, Tunisia during the war.

General Doolittle noted that there was a heavy crosswind that day and the aircrew's had to battle the controls on takeoff. B-17F #42-30121 was rolling under full power when the crosswind caught and lifted the wing of the aircraft, the lower wing caught the ground and the aircraft flipped over landing on its top. The aircraft slid with momentum into fuel barrels which exploded. This in turn caused the aircraft's ruptured fuel tanks in its wings to explode and in turn its entire bomb load to explode. There were no survivors.

William was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in the El Alia Cemetery, Algiers, Algeria and was later moved here.

Service # O-734515
