Charles was killed instantly by a piece of shrapnel from an enemy shell, on the first day of the Amiens Battle, later known as the Hundred Day Offensive, that ultimately led to the end of WW I.

He is also remembered on a family marker at Mount Forest Cemetery in Southgate, Ontario.
