Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1940). From Oklahoma, he was a Major in the United States Army Air Forces, Army Air Corps and is memorialized at the East Coast Memorial, New York, New York.

Recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and Air Medal.

His brother Paul S Thompson (USMA 1929) was killed in action in Europe while serving with the 908th Field Artillery Battlation 83rd Division. A second brother, William M Thompson (USMA January 1943) served in the Pacific Theatre for a short time and in Korea

Son of Dr. William Albert and Grace Anne Langston Thompson. Other siblings were Albert, Robert, Don, and Max.

Major Thompson was on board a B-17G # 42-39805, flying as the provisional pilot, when the plane was lost due to engine failure while on a flight from Gander, Newfoundland to Prestwick, England as a replacement aircraft for the 8th Air Force.
