'"Elsie Eby Coombs was born about 1804 in Virginia.

'Ailcy' Coombs married Ezra Ackley on 12 July 1821 in Licking County, Ohio. Ezra, his wife Elsie and their two young daughters were part of the first group of families to settle in what became Newark, Kendall County, Illinois. They arrived on the 18th day of April 1831. In the summer of 1832, the Ackley family fled to an area around the Wabash River. They remained there until peace was restored. The Ackley family returned to his claim in August 1833.

Ezra Ackley died on 30 May 1840 in Kendall County, Illinois. There is a marriage record in Kendall County showing that a Elsy Ackley married a Joseph Smith on 14 August 1842.

It is not known how long Elsie and her children remained in Kendall County. By 1850, Elsie and her five children had moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. The census shows the household was just Elsie and her children. By 1860, Elsie and her youngest son, Chester, were back in Kendall County, Illinois. Elsie then moved again before 1870 to Adams Township, Keokuk County, Iowa to live with her son George and his family.
