During World War II, he was an officer of the 8th Royal Fusiliers. He died in Anzio, Italy, during Operation Shingle or The Battle of Anzio; declared missing or presumed dead on February 18, 1944. He and his wife Mary had two sons, the younger being Roger Waters, cofounder, bassist and songwriter for the rock band Pink Floyd. Eric Waters died when son Roger was only five months old, but many of Roger Waters' albums and songs reference the evils of war and his father's death as a result of it. The 1983 Pink Floyd album 'The Final Cut' was written entirely by Roger Waters and dedicated to the father that he never knew.
