Private Altomonte was last seen two miles north of Bollendorf, Germany, as his company (Able Co. 1st Bn, 2nd Infantry) executed a nighttime attack towards the Prum River. The terrain was described as "rugged and wooden" with small groups of German soldiers operating in the vicinity. Altomonte became separated from his company and did not rejoin them.

At the time, his comrades believed German forces captured Altomonte, but he was never reported as a prisoner of war. He was presumed dead as of 18 February 1946.
