Ed was the youngest son of Jonas Alfred Berglund and Alfreda Elise Gustafson, and only child of theirs to be born in the United States; his parents and elder siblings having been born in Sweden. He served in the Spanish American War as part of the Infantry. He lived with his brother Alfred for over three decades, and was a close and much admired uncle to his brother's children.
