Clara was the daughter of Carl J. Berglund and Louisa Isacsdotter, born in Sweden, and immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1869. She married David Brooks Lewis III in 1884, and settled in Illinois, and living there until her husband died in 1909. She then moved to Iowa to live with her brother Alfred Jonas Berglund. She and her husband David did not have any children, but after her husband's death, she was instrumental in the raising of her brother Alfred's four young children, after their mother, Alfreda Gustafson-Berglund died of Tuburculosis in 1909.
