Gladys H. Engeman, 98, of Everest, Kansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family August 2, 2010 at the Horton Community Hospital.

She was born September 12, 1911 in Doniphan County, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar and Tillie Bahr Evans. On September 7, 1932 she married Charles Frederick Engeman. They were married for 39 years, he preceded her in death on October 19, 1971.

Gladys and her husband owned and operated several businesses throughout their married life beginning with Engeman Donuts in Atchison, Kansas and ending with Everest Pool Hall, Everest, Kansas. After the death of her husband, Gladys at the age of 75 years old, purchased the Everest Café, 12 years later she sold the café and retired at the age of 86.

Gladys has resided at the Tri-County Manor, Horton, Kansas since 2000. She enjoyed embroidering tea towels, she took a lot of pride embroidering quilt blocks for her great grandchildren and teaching others the art of embroidering, along with playing Dominos and spending time with her family and friends. Gladys was a member of the First Christian Church, Everest; CWF and VFW Owens Aux.

She is preceded in death by her husband Charlie; sons Charles and Emmett; sisters, Emma Snyder, Goldie Pike, Mollie Engeman; brothers Andy Evans, Clarence Evans and Emmett Evans.

She is survived by a daughter, Retta Snyder and son in law, Gerald, Everest; son Francis Engeman and daughter in law Earnestine, Atchison; nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren with her seventh great great grandchild due in September; and a sister Clara Porter, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Visitation will be held Saturday August 7 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Kagin officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. Friends may call the funeral home after 12 Noon Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the Gladys Engeman memorial fund to be designated at a later by the family and may be sent in care of the funeral home, 909 Central, Horton, KS 66439.
