He was born July 28, 1930 in Mansfield the son of John and Ernestine Schiller Gross and was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School.
A U.S. Army veteran, Don served in the Korean War with 101st Airborne Division, earning the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge in 1953. Don also then served four years in the Army Reserves.
On March 31, 1951 he married Patricia Ann Lorentz with whom he celebrated nearly 60 years of marriage.
For 42 years Don worked in the offices at White Westinghouse Consolidated.
An athlete, Don enjoyed all sports, but participated in fast pitch softball with the Liederkrantz, and played in an industrial basketball league in the 1950's and 1960's. He also greatly enjoyed supporting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren at their various sporting events.
A lifelong Richland County resident, Don was a member of Diamond Hills Baptist Church, where he served on several boards, was a member of the choir, and served as a deacon.
Family was a treasure to Don. He was The #1 Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa encouraging his family as a pillar of faith. He enjoyed spending time at their usual cottage at Lake Erie with his family every summer. He was always up for playing games with his great grandchildren, especially cards, board games, or even Barbies. Their laughter and squeals brought him great delight, and they all referred to him as "BUDDY". His grandchildren never left the house without receiving their special treat.
He is survived by his loving wife Patricia, a son and daughter-in-law Donald, Jr. and Desiree Gross of Mansfield, two daughters and sons-in-law Kathy and Thomas Phillips of Berlin Heights, and Karen and Alan Smith of Mansfield; six grandchildren Donald J. Gross, III, Heidi Gross, Travis Gross, and Kristopher and Christy Phillips, Brandy Cooley, and Sherry and Calvin Bevelle; seven great grandchildren Bailey, Kellie Miranda, and Peyton Phillips, Brandon and Makayla Cooley, and Caleb and Armani Bevelle; a sister Mary Jane Caraway, and a brother and sister-in-law Michael and Kathy Gross all of Mansfield, a sister-in-law Carolyn Gross, brothers-in-law Edward McQuillen, and James Lorentz, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends in Christ.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by two brothers William and Richard Gross, his favorite cousin Shirley Lehr, and a precious granddaughter Kelly Ann Phillips.
