Owner of Greene's Hamburger's, a Farmington landmark at the corner of Ten Mile and Orchard Lake Rds., died Monday morning at home following a lengthy illness.

Born Carman Welton Jenkins, Jake was the son of Tom and Mattie (Bradford) Jenkins. He married Mary (Hundley) in 1954.

Jake proudly served his country during the Korean Era in the US Army, from May 17, 1951 until his honorable discharge on April 23, 1953.

On May 21, 1957, Jim and Eunice Greene built Greene's Hamburgers at the corner of 10 Mile and Orchard Lake Rds. Jake started working there as manager the day it opened. He leased the building and business on January 1, 1977, and remained the lessor until November 17, 1982, when he and his wife, Mary, bought the business and property. After working seven days a week in this 24 hour a day restaurant, he and Mary retired from day to day operations on June 30, 1997, and began leasing the business to their manager. This lease to a former employee is ongoing, although they still today retain ownership of the building and property.

Upon celebrating the 50th anniversary of Greene's on May 21, 2007, the Jenkins received proclamations from both city of Farmington and Farmington Hills for their longstanding and steadfast presence in the communities.

Jake is the beloved husband of 56 years to Mary; loving father of Debbie (Randy) Sutton; dear brother of Ray; and cherished grandfather of Danny Sutton.
