... Mr. Gates had been troubled with heart disease for some years, but it came on in an aggravated form last winter resulting in dropsy, till finally, after six months of acute suffering, he suddenly passed away last Thursday.
... John Gates was born at Middlefield, Ohio,in the year 1822. ... He made an overland trip to California in six months and six days, remaining in California three years, and returning home by way of Nicaragua. In 1858 he set out in search of gold, this time in Pike's Peak. Physical disability debarred him from entering the army. ... In the year 1883 he came to Sauk Centre where he spend the remainder of his days. During the twelve years he lived in our mist John Gates had never an enemy, while his friends may be counted by the score today. ... He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and three children, W.A. Gates; Mrs. E.W. White, of Delaware, Ohio, and Miss Belle Gates, of St. Paul.
After a brief service at the house on Friday, the remains were taken to the Middlefield, O., where his father and mother and three children are buried. Of his own family he was the oldest child. The others, one brother and four sisters are still living in Middlefield. Mrs. Gates went with the remains to Middlefield, where she will make her home in the future.
