Jesse married on March 3, 1859, in Davis County, Iowa, to Sarah Ann Anderson, at the home of her parents. She died in Center Township, Lyon County, Kansas. They had 8 children.

Jesse James Cardwell Van Cleave. This photo may have been taken in 1865 in Minnesota when Jesse and his brothers Peter and David were living there. The three photos of the brothers bear striking similarities as well as the clothing style. His left eye is missing. An accident when he was a teenager.

Jesse James Cardwell Van Cleave built this stone two story home, finishing the construction in 1883. The rock for it was quarried in the cow field just across the road to the left. It was built with two layers of stone, leaving a space between them. This kept the heat in the house during the winter and the heat on the outside during summer. Photo taken in 1933. Ann Hamilton Van Cleave Bivin is on the right). Several photos of the house were taken in the 1930's with various family members, and in 1984 during a family reunion.
