Howard F. West, civic leader, dies
Howard F. West, 49, of 1400 Caton Ave, former president of the Illinois Clay Products Co., died early today (Sept. 12, 1967) at Silver Cross Hospital.
Death Followed a lingering illness.
Mr. West was active in civic and community affairs. He played a prominent role in Republican party activities and was head of the finance division of the former Community Chest.
He was a past director of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association and was a director of the Home Savings and Loan Association and the First National Bank. He was a life member of the Silver Cross Hospital Board of Trustees since 1965 and had been active in the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce.
He was a past president of the Joliet Rotary Club and of the Will County Manufacturers Association.
Mr. West served on the initial gifts committee for the YMCA, the Red Cross and the United Fund drives.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of Harwood Post 5, American Legion, the Joliet Country Club and the Union League Club of Chicago.
A son of the late Fred H. and Jesse West, he was born in Lockport and educated in the schools there. In 1940 he earned an engineering degree at the University of Illinois.
He served with Republic Steel Corporation until he left for a six months course in the Air Force Technical School at Yale University. For four years he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Westwood Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. G.A. Moulthrop of the Lockport Congregational Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
