John Ambros Barnes was the son of Jehu and Elizabeth Datsan Parkes Barnes. They lived north of the Fairview church and cemetery where John had a blacksmith shop. He might forge a new frying pan for the housewife or sharpen a plow for a farmer. He could shoe a horse, put a new tire on a wagon or turn some fancy scrollwork for the bank in town. He married Mildred Melvena Dulaney on Feb. 24, 1876. To this union they had 9 children.
