Charles William Mayo was the son of Mayo co-founder Charles Horace Mayo and Edith Graham Mayo. He chaired the Mayo Foundation and the Board of Regents at the U of M. He and wife Alice had 8 children. He was killed on his 70th birthday in a car accident.
