John S. Bradbury was a pioneer of the California Gold Rush. He was killed in the explosion of the steamboat Jenny Lind on the San Francisco Bay, between the present-day Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges. He left behind his wife Mary Bolles Bradbury (Burial in Riverview Cemetery Oxford NY as Mary B. Bolles) and newborn daughter Florence Amanda Bradbury(Forest Hill Cemetery, Pewaukee WI).

John was first interred in San Francisco CA in Yerba Buena Cemetery Grave 2641, then in 1867 his burial was relocated to Sunset Hill Cemetery with the assistance of Mrs. Sophia Twichell of Guilford (Sunset Hill Cemetery, also see Benjamin S. Twitchell's Find-A-Grave profile).

John's iron grave marker was made by his father, Andrew Bradbury, proprietor of the Guilford Iron Works. John rests beside the graves of his parents Andrew and Amanda Bradbury, and his siblings, Rhoby H and William T. Bradbury.

On the 160th anniversary of the Jenny Lind disaster an historic marker was erected in Alviso Marina County Park in the Alviso Historic District of San Jose California. John S. Bradbury is listed among those killed in the disaster. His name appears at the top of the second column from the left. (See additional photos by clicking the Photo tab)
