A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five [sic] at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, April 1, 1862, mustered into federal service there April 21 as a private with Co. A, 4th Minnesota Infantry, but deserted at Memphis, Tennessee, to date February 28, 1863.
He clearly returned to Pennsylvania with his family because his children's death certificates show that his son James was born in Williamsport, Lycoming County, and the others in York County. He died at his home in Foustown at the reported age of 73-8-2 from "carcinoma of stomach" leading to "physical exhaustion."
