She suffered many hardships during her time here on earth. Suffered through many storms and hurricanes, Lost two sons shortly after they were born and a daughter who was only five years old. Her husband died when she was 54 years old and left her with an eight year old son. She also had 10 grown children living. She was up before day, cooking and washing clothes and during summer, she then went to the fields to work. She had to be strong, she lived 'till she was 92 years old.The eight yr. old began working in the fields with the men after he turned ten. He moved on to commercial fishing, shrimping and crabbing when he was about 13. After completing high school in Beaufort he moved to Newport News Va. and began working for the C&P Telephone Co. of Va. he worked there for eighteen years before getting a transfer back to Bell South in Asheville, N.C. He eventually retired in 2002 with 45 years service. During his years with the Bell System he also worked part time (10 yrs.) with the Mecklingburg County Sheriffs Dept.
