Mr. Spear was one of my teachers -- his son was in my class.

William Spear ...nickname "BILL"...

I hope you will consider some of the following info for inclusion on his memorial.

Audrey

~~~~~~
Bill Spear was an excellent teacher.
He enthused his students to high goals with every subject he presented - from biology (cutting up smelly frogs) to chemistry (memorizing detailed charts of info). One would think these subjects would be dreaded but crossing the threshold into his classroom assured everyone of an hour of pleasurable learning - the sort of learning that would be helpful and stay in your memory.
Bill Spear often taught life-lessons without wagging a finger and preaching to his students. One time a young boy - wanting to smoke - stood beside Spear at his desk - and asked for a Hall Pass to go to the restroom. Mr. Spear looked up at him - grabbed the pack of ciggies from the students pocket, crushed them and tossed the crumpled mass into the trash replying:
"Sure - here's your Pass!"
The student laughed and wandered off down the hall...
Mr. Spear had a broad face filled with extra lines that enhanced his smile so his entire face said 'HAPPY!" He was short in build, however there was no other instructor on staff at Joplin Senior High School, who cast a more profound or beloved or larger shadow. He was THE FAVORITE TEACHER of the entire staff.
It is very telling that decades after graduation, when his eldest son, HOLLIS, attended his class reunions, over and over he heard the same words:
"Hollis -- good to see you. How is your wonderful Dad?"
