A funeral service will be held on August 11th at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170 at 6 P.M. Her grandson, Pastor Jason McPherson, will officiate. A private family burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on August 12th.
Mrs. McPherson was born April 18, 1919 near Palestine, Texas, to Lawrence Allen and Laura Octavie Parker Wilson. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in Phoenix, AZ and attended the University of Arizona, where she majored in journalism and was editor of the 1940 class yearbook. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, as well as Mortar Board honorary society.
She and the late Lt. General John B. McPherson (Ret.) were married in 1940. Mrs. McPherson was an active Air Force wife for over 33 years. In addition to her many duties as an Air Force commander's wife, she was a writer who was published in several popular and military magazines. Her book "Four Decades of Courage" detailed the history of air power in the United States. She was a former member of the National Writers Association and Washington Independent Writers. She was an inspiration to many who knew her.
Irene was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who supported her children's numerous interests and encouraged them to live independent lives.
She is survived by her four children, Kenneth Ralph (Patricia) McPherson, of The Villages, FL, Sue (Irby) Cain, of Paradise Valley, AZ, Laura Shirley (Ben) McLean, of Kingwood, TX, and Robin (John) Rohrback, of Vienna, VA; one granddaughter and 10 grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
