Civil War Veteran, enlisted August 20, 1861
Corporal in Company B, 24th Regiment,
Missouri Infantry Volunteers

Wounded and sent to field hospital in Columbus, KY on October 27, 1863

Stephen Gallion was born in Kentucky and moved to Iowa. He married Alementa Casteel in Putnam County, Indiana. They had three sons, Archibald 1850, Josiah 1852, and Jacob 1854.

After his wife died he married her sister, Jane [Mahala Jane Casteel]. Any children by Stephen and Jane? [Yes, as it turns out.] Minnie Sell wrote that Jacob had some 1/2 brothers and a sister. Mahala Jane was married to James Riley Hobson (b. 1825) before marrying Stephen A. Gallion. They had four children all born in Iowa: Andrew 1851, Lavina 1852, Belinda 1854, and William 1856

Stephen moved to Missour and lived in Marshfield, Webster County, Missouri in 1856 as he is listed in the first census taken that year by Dr. James McElwain (who coincidentally was the father of Stephen's son Jacob's future wife, Mahala McElwain). In the census taken 1860 he is listed as a day laborer (value $80). (12 JUL 1860 pg. no. 68 family 441-437.)

"July 15, 1897 -- Marshfield Chronicle reports a telegram received in Marshfield from Tulare, CA informing that on Tuesday afternoon, July 13, Stephen Gallion died suddenly. He had left Missouri for California on June 28 with his son, Jacob."
Stephen is my Great Great Great Grandfather. He married Alimenta Casteel. Their son Jacob Andrew Gallion was my Great Great Grandfather. He married Mahala McElwain and had my Great Grandfather James Walker Gallion, who married Drucilla Ragsdale and had my grandmother Mattie Inez Gallion. Mattie Inez married Orville Ensley Snodgrass and had my mother, Inis Marlene Harris.
