At the age of 4 years and four months, on February 18, 1977, he wandered away from the baby sitter's home on "Potato Hill", south of Atchison, Kansas. There was an extensive 5 day search. His body was never found and the case was closed by the Atchison County Sheriff's Department as "missing/presumed dead - fell in the Missouri River".
A memorial service was held at the Stanton Mortuary in Atchison, Kansas on March 6, 1977.
His grave site is at the Mount Vernon Cemetery, south of Atchison, Kansas.
A book "In Search of Jeremy" was written by his mother, Melodye Faith Hathaway, which tells the story of his disappearance and the aftermath that followed.
