John E. "Sonny" Lechman, 77, of Derry, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, Pa.
Mr. Lechman was born March 28, 1931, in Derry, Pa., the son of John and Mary (Meyers) Lechman.
John was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Latrobe, Pa., and had been retired from Teamsters Local 30. He had been employed by B&P Motor Express and had been a member of Loyal Order of Moose, Latrobe. John also was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dora M. (Phillips) Lechman of Derry, Pa., three sons, John N. "Nick" Lechman and wife Suzanne of Effingham, George E . Lechman and wife Cindy of Jeannette, Pa., and Michael K. Lechman and wife Mollie Bee of Effingham; eight grandchildren, Kristi Kim and husband Rich, Natalie Lechman, Jennifer Lechman, Nicholas Lechman, Anthony Lechman, Sara Lechman, Daniel Lechman and Ellen Lechman; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John also was preceded in death by a brother, William Lechman; and four sisters, Maryann Vallozzi, Helen Miller, Jean Ihnat and Eleanor Spillar.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at John J. Lopatich Funeral Home Inc., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe, Pa. Parastas will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Xavier Elambassery; Panachida will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by divine liturgy at noon at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, Latrobe, Pa., with the Rev. Regis Dusecina celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Derry, Pa.
