Fillmore County News, Exeter, Thursday November 1, 1923: ALVARETTA BURRESS

Alvaretta Girton was born at Dixon, Ill. September 18, 1853 and died at Fremont, Nebraska October 22, 1223 at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 4 days. She came with her parents [actually, just her mother and brother] to Nebraska in 1879 and was married to James Q. Burress January 10, 1882. They resided in Exeter one year, after which they bought a farm southwest of Exeter, part of which is now the village of Burress. Here she made her home for forty years. After the death of her husband, December 15, 1915, she has spent a great deal of her time among her children, at the time of her death being at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Hand. She was of a very sunny Christian disposition, always ready to act when and where her services might be needed and in turn was respected by all. The beauty of the word "Mother" was exemplified in all her doings.

She is survived by her four children. Elizabeth Hand of Fremont, Lela Ackers of Tobias, Florence Vogtlander of near Geneva and Henry Burress of Burress, and sixteen grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the late home in Burress by Rev. Johnson of Fremont, who was an old friend of the family and at one time pastor in Geneva. His text was a very appropriate one. Appreciation for the deceased was shown by the number of old neighbors and friends who followed the remains to their last resting place in the Exeter cemetery and by the beautiful floral offerings.
