Anthropologist. He was an Omaha Indian who is famous as the first professional Native American ethnologist. He worked with the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian focusing his research on the Omaha and Osage tribes. In addition to his many publications, he worked closely with fellow anthropologist Alice Fletcher with whom he made valuable original recordings of Omaha and Osage traditional songs and chants.
