Horace W. Wilcox, 89, of 95 Lake St. here, died March 7, 1997 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born May 20, 1907 in New York City, he was the son of Albert and Bertha (Kennedy) Wilcox.

Mr. Wilcox was a past member of the Saranac Lake Elks Lodge and former president of the Hotel and Motel Association. During the 1940s he operated the first fleet of taxi cabs in Lake Placid, and the first to be equipped with two-way radios.

In 1952, he began the operation of the Lakeland Beach Cabins on Mirror Lake. He had the first water ski schools on Mirror Lake and Lake Placid. He sold his cabin business in 1966 and moved to his Lake Street home where he operated a snowmobile sales and service operation for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche Reyome Wilcox of Lake Placid; three daughters, Mrs. Harry (Aline) LaBrake of Lake Placid; Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) Thompson of Tallahassee, Fla. and Babette Ledwith of Lake Placid; one son, Jackie Wilcox Sr. and his wife Betsy, of Clearwater Fla. and Lake Placid; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A sister, Myra LaBombard, died June 6, 1971.

Funeral Services were held at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid with the Rev. Mark Demers, pastor of the Adirondack Community Church officiating. Burial will be in the Saint Agnes Cemetery in May.
