Michael Fox was reportedly born in the Lough Neagh area of County Tyrone, Ireland around 1811. (His parent's are unknown due to the lack of records available in Ireland. ) Sometime before 1839 he married Mary McCullagh in Ireland. They had 11 children, 8 of them born in Ireland:
Anna (Thomas Taggert), Bernard (Mary Sophia McMullen), Bridget, Catherine Ann (Garrett McCourt), Mary (John Mahoney), Patrick (died young from a lightning strike), Sarah, John (Johanna Marie Lynch), Jane/Jennie, Elizabeth, and Michael Jr. (Emma Nelson).

As one family story written by a Fox great-grandchild goes.....
"...the trip took six weeks on a sailing ship. Michael looked for work in New York but had to go down to Chesapeake Bay where he drove the horses that pulled the boats up and down the shore. They met some people from Luxembourg who had heard the farming was good in Wisconsin, so they joined in with them and went to Wisconsin. They didn't stay in Wisconsin but continued on to Wabasha County, Minnesota and settled near the Zumbro River. There were so many Irish there it was called the "Irish Ridge"."

They arrived in New York on 13 May 1858 on the famous sailing ship: Dreadnought. By the 1860 US Census they were living in Wabasha, Minnesota. Michael died in West Albany on the family farm in April 1862.

[We have been fortunate that several descendants, including Rita Fox, researched the Fox/McCullagh family line in the late 1900's and made trips to Ireland. We owe them a debt of thanks. Helen]
