William Harrison Taber was a lawyer and president of the small American State Bank in Terre Haute, IN from 1908 until January 1912, when it was closed by state auditors. On 19 Jul 1912, he pleaded guilty to a single count of embezzlement and spent 2 years at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Indiana. He was paroled on 4 Aug 1914 and released from parole on 31 Jul 1915.

After his release, he and his wife moved to Kansas City, MO and began fresh. They appear in the Kansas City directories begining in 1916. William sold insurance and worked as a clerk for a railroad, and, for a year, worked as lawyer again. Wife Rose worked as a waitress at McClintock Restaraunt. By 1922, they began a business called the Kansas City Apron House. It was located in the Argyle Building at the corner of McGee and 12th streets, where they also resided. They died virtually penniless, which my father and his sister blame on the Pendergast political machine. The Pendergast machine ruled Jackson County, MO, in the 1920-1930's, with strong-arm tactics, coercion & extortion.
