June 14, 1928 - May 15, 2010(81) Born Sumas, WA to F.W. Spradley and Nanette Settles Spradley.
Peacefully surrendered to respiratory disease in his daughter's home, attended by his devoted wife Sue, daughter Nanette, and firstborn granddaughter Courtney. His last months were joyful, surrounded by those he held dear.
John married the girl of his dreams, Sue Alice McBee on November 22, 1950, and was a wonderful and attentive father to their four children. Predeceased by his children, John Michael (Bonnie) Spradley of Gardnerville, NV in 2009, and Mary Spradley (Robin) Leggewie of Lake Arrowhead CA in 2007, he is survived by his wife of 59-1/2 years Sue Spradley, six of his 8 siblings, son Timothy (Lisa) Spradley of Sylmar, and daughter Nanette Spradley (Ben) Weinberg of Northridge. "Grandpa John" to Courtney Gilmore, Yvette, Roger and Daniel Leggewie, Allyne Weinberg, and Tiffany Spradley, "Uncle John" to countless nieces and nephews, and "Dad" to untold numbers of unofficially adopted children worldwide. His beloved wife, children, and grandchildren were the light of his life.
He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, and upon his return attended LA City College and UCLA. He worked in Deafness Research at Los Angeles Children's Hospital, before teaching Physics at Los Angeles Trade Technical College from 1962-1991. His hobby of bicycling led to proprietorship of Sylmar Cyclery from 1979-2001.
His interests included restoring his "Mighty Wurlitzer" 1200-pipe theatre organ, Aeolian Duo-Art baby grand Player Piano, Amateur "Ham" Radio under the call signs W6ZFR and later AB6OH, solar power, and electric vehicles, but above all, living a life of service to his fellow man.
A memorial celebration open to all whose lives John touched will be held Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm, at First Baptist Church of San Fernando, 215 N. Macneil Street, San Fernando, CA 91340 with a dessert reception immediately following.
