He was the son of Edmund T Barstow and Beulah Minnie Amy. He was born about 1907 in Topeka Kansas.

"Alan was a Lieutenant (J.G.) in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Before receiving his commision in August 1942, he was chief NYA radio engineer at WIBW for about five years before becoming supervisor of the NYA radio unit in 1940. Alan was an accomplished violinist and was a former member of the Topeka Little Symphony Orchestra. He studied music at the Kansas University School of Music. At the time of his death in 1943 he was stationed at Brunswick Maine."
