Manelius was the 2nd son of John & Eliza (Fry) Caldwell. He fought in the Civil War with his 3 brothers, as a sergeant in the Virginia Cavalry. He was a farmer and lived next to his brother and parents.

He married Caroline Houchins (1839-1869) in Mercer Co, WV, and they had these children:

Ballard Chapman Caldwell (1863-1936)
Andrew T. Caldwell (1868-1940)
Caroline Caldwell (1869-1869)

He married Celia Ann Farley in Mercer Co, WV on Feb. 23, 1870, and they had these children:

Barbara Elizabeth Caldwell Lyon (1871-1960)
Judith Emaline Caldwell Ellison (1873-1966)
John Lloyd Caldwell (1877-1968)
Oscar Jordan Caldwell (1879-1965)
Daisy Caldwell Ellison Huffman (1884-1964)
