"Turby F. Thomas Family History Traced"
"Several Appling Countians have been busy lately digging up some of the family tree history. Descendants of Turby F. Thomas have the genealogy of that family prepared now in a bound work.
Prepared by Curtis and Joyce Thomas, the history goes back to the origin of Appling County with much history of the early families included. From the days of the 'Wiregrass Territory' to the 1820 census to the present, the account outlines in brief the history of the region.
In their research, the Thomas family discovered the grave of Turby F. Thomas. It was found on land now belonging to ITT Rayonier. It was overgrown and almost undetectable when first found.
Now that the grave and others at the site have been preserved. ITT has fences in the area and Curtis Thomas has placed crosses at the graves that could be found. Two of the graves have headstones.
Those graves belong to Harriet Wilson and Turby F. Thomas. Mrs. Wilson was the wife of Elder Benjamin Blitch, pastor of Ten Mile Baptist Church until 1869. The headstone reads, "Harriet Wilson, Wife of Elder Benjamin Blitch. Born Jan. 25, 1814. Died Nov. 12, 1877. Asleep in Jesus."
Turby F. Thomas was one of the earliest settlers in Appling County. He acquired lands along the Altamaha River in an 1820 land lottery. He built a plantation there and later served as a state senator from 1826 til 1832.
He was commissioned a Major in the 95th Battalion of the George Militia in 1826. He first married Catherine Bausle. After she died in 1823, he married Susan Tillman. Later, after Thomas' death, she married Paul Carter.
The headstone for Thomas reads, "Turby F. Thomas. Born in Burke Co. Ga. Dec. 7, 1796. Died March 22, 1845. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and a Whig of 1840.
The old cemetery is located near the home of the late I. J. Davis near the Altamaha River. Other graves are there, but no identification has been found for these deceased.
