Foy, Richard H.
(89) passed away April 13, 2010. Born May 10, 1920, in Boulder Creek, California, he was an adventurous, intelligent soul; he achieved much during his lifetime and encouraged others, particularly women, to set and reach personal goals. In 1938, he graduated Boulder Creek Union High School; while there he was on the swim team and played the saxophone. In 1942, Richard graduated the University of California, Berkeley, with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering; then he entered the United States Army Signal Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant; his commission was to install radar, which took him to India and Burma. In 1945, he left the Army. His 60-year career began at MIT's Radiation Laboratory during WWII, where he learned about radar, and culminated after many years in the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) Communication System Joint Program Office, The Aerospace Corporation. He advocated human rights, through his activities with Amnesty International and the ACLU. After his retirement, he took yoga classes, studied with Omnilore, helped the Women's Coalition South Bay (of which he was a founder), and did his best to enlighten government officials about global climate change. In 1974, Richard and his beloved Patricia Biebl began traveling the world; also, they attended an annual barbecue in Boulder Creek, and he supported the San Lorenzo Valley Museum that includes Foy family memorabilia. A resident of Redondo Beach, he was involved in the community, and established numerous close friendships. Richard was predeceased by Patricia Biebl (December 2009); parents Clinton and Marie Foy; sister Lois Friedrichs; brother Edward Foy; and daughter Gretchen Foy. He is survived by his daughter Jan Foy; nieces Kay (Bob) Chambers, Joan Van Lehn, and Carol (Bill Vreeland) Friedrichs; and cousins Helen McDonald and Norma Babock. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010, 11 AM, Rice Mortuary, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance.
