Jeremiah J. Nichols was the son of Samuel M. and Mary Miller Payne Nichols. He was born on Long Island, New York in 1836; his parents traveled to Andover, Henry County, Illinois in 1837 where Jeremiah was raised on a farm near Andover with his brothers, Vincent and Cornelius, and a siser, Priscilla (married John Fassett).
On November 24, 1858, Jeremiah married Emma J. Whitman in Henry County, Illinois. They were the parents of:
1. John (married to Rosetta Hulbert)
2. Frank
3. Mary Luella (married to Richard Wilde)
4. Daisy Jane (married to W. W. Holmes and Ed Sharpe)
5. Capron J. (Allen)(married to Almeda Hayne
and Katherine Zais)
6. Samuel
7. Willie Arthur
The 1880 census shows Jeremiah and family
living in Saunders County, Nebraska. Land
records for Dixon County, Nebraska, show
they purchased farm land in December of 1883 with possession in February 1884. Emma J. (Jane or Jennie) passed away in December of 1892 and Jeremiah lived with his son, Cap (Allen) until his death in 1909.

J.J. Nichols death notice
One of the old residents of Concord, J. J. Nichols passed away on Friday, at the the age 73 years. Mr. Nichols had been bedfast for several months with cancer. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. G. McClusky of Laurel. The remains were intered in the Concord cemetery.

Mrs. M. E. Clark (mentioned in the newspaper article submitted by Janet, at the top right) was Mary Elizaeth, daughter of Samuel and Sarah Miller Nichols. Mary's mother died in 1833 and Samuel married Sarah's sister, Mary Miller Payne, mother of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah was a half-brother of Edgar, Emily (Price), Erastus, John, and Mary (Clark) - children of Samuel and Sarah Miller Nichols
Jeremiah was also a half-brother of Charles E. and Jonas M. Payne, children of his mother's first marriage to Jonas Payne on Long Island, New York.
