Suggested edit: John Pocklington, illegitimate, birth registered Sep 1847 Qtr, Thorne district, Yorkshire, England. His mother was Ann Pocklington, born 1827 at Birkin, Yorkshire. We can assume from the birth records for his siblings, and his residence in the June 1841 census, that John was born at the hamlet of Sykehouse in Fishlake parish, covered by the Thorne registration district, Yorkshire.

The English census on 6 June 1841 for Sykehouse, Yorkshire, England has: Ann Pocklington 28, [no occuption recorded]; William 5; George 4; Caroline 3; Mary 9wks – Yks.

The family emigrated to north America, arriving New York on 4 November 1848 on board the "Siddons". Anne Pocklington 28, accompanied by James 12, Wm 10, Geo 9, Caroline 8, Mary 6, Charles 4, Smith 2, and John inf. Also on board was John's older cousin also named John Pocklington 5, son of William and Anne.

John lived at Lenawee county, Michigan, USA, and can be found at Tecumseh in the 1860 and 1870 US Federal censuses; and at Ridgeway in the 1880-1930 censuses. He was recorded as born England, and his ages reflected a birth year of 1846-1848, with the exception of 1860 when he was recorded as aged 18, ie born ca 1842. He was never recorded living with his parents or siblings. He cannot be found in the 1850 census, but his siblings were all living at Lenawee county, Michigan, each with a different family (except for James, who can also be found in subsequent censuses, and Mary, who is assumed to have died, together with their mother Ann, prior to the 1850 census because no records for them can be found in Michigan).

The US death certificate for John Pocklington states that he died 20 February 1939 at Britton, Lenawee, Michigan, USA, aged 92 years, 6 months, 8 days, born England, parents unknown. This points to a birth date around August 1847, despite the death certificate stating his birthdate was 12 August 1845.
