Michael Stokes (born September 1818 in Ireland and died July 1, 1902 Ellicottville, NY) and Katharine Lady Upton (born June 1826 in Ashgrove, Newcastle West, Limerick, Ireland and died 1907 in Ellicottville, NY) married 1844 in Ireland. Michael was an only son. He was an overseer of land for an English landlord and he was also a gardener. Katharine was the daughter of Sir John Upton, and English landowner, who owned Ashgrove Estate in New Castle West, Limerick County, Ireland. She was known as Lady Upton. Michael arrived from Ireland in 1851 and Katharine arrived from Ireland in 1852. They both are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Section 9 lot 9. They had 10 children and they are all known. Their children's names are: William Stokes, Ellen Stokes, John Stokes, Katherine Stokes, Bridget Stokes, Mary Stokes, Michael Stokes, Henry Stokes, Jane Stokes, and Jennie Jane Stokes. William Stokes married Mary L. Keating.
