MISSING FOR TWO WEEKS
Believed to Have Been Found by Americans Who Drove Germans Back
"Dodd fell gloriously fighting to the end. Buried by loving freinds,"
This cablegram received Thursday morning by Dudley E. Waters from Morris Cassard, jr., tells briefly the fate of Lieut. Daniel Waters Cassard, Grand Rapids aviator who was reported missing in France two weeks ago. It had been uncertain whether Cassard had been killed or was a prisoner, as when his machine was last seen it appearedto be under control though descending rapidly behind the German lines.
It is presumed that American aviators found the body after the Germans had been driven from the sector in which it fell and that wounds upon it told that Cassard had been fatally shot before he turned his machine earthward.
Lieut. Cassard was the first Grand Rapids aviator to win distinction among Grand Rapids aviators in France by destroying a Hun plane

The body will then be placed in the mausoleum at Oak Hill cemetery

War training Fort Sheridan Ill., The Royal Flying Corps school at Toronto and later in Texas before being sent to France with the first pursuit group of the 147th aero squadron.
In October 1931 Grand Rapids Airport was dedicated as "Daniel Waters Cassard Field", currently Kent County International Airport

1st Lt USAS, grad Univ of Canada, Toronto, ROTC, flight instructor. Flew the Nieuport 28 in combat and on July 16, 1918, was killed in action. Buried Aug 6 1918 near Dormans. WWI Decorations, victory medal with 2 battle clasps, 1 gold overseas chevron, French c de G with Palms. Reinterred in Oak Hill Cemetery, Grand Rapids, MI where the Grand Rapids Airport was named after him.

I am from the area where Lieutenant Daniel Watters CASSARD died. His grave is located in the meadow in SOILLY village, two kilometers from Dormans. I have indicated the location of the tomb at one local association, specialized WW I.
After so long time, nobody talked over this past. I spent my childhood in this village so I have given this information. I enclose some pictures of the tomb
I currently live in New Caledonia in Noumea, where the American base was very important during the Second World War.

Son of Morris Cassard b 1862 Ohio and Anna Waters b Michigan. Had siblings named Morris Jr and Dudley B Cassard.
