~Father Daniel E. Anholzer, OFM. CAP~

Father Dan was a close friend of the family. Ron's mother was his secretary for several years. Last Sunday on Mother's Day, we attended Mass at St. Joseph's. Father is known for his spiritual and motivational homilies. We heard him give one of the best homilies ever on that day. His message was how to have peace on Earth and peace within ourselves. He ended with "Love one another. Peace be with you." The talk was so moving that everyone applauded.

There was a beautiful rainbow in the sky Thursday morning after he passed. A parishioner believes it was Father Dan saying goodbye to his "Rainbow Parish."

Capuchin Friar Father Daniel E. Anholzer, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Saginaw, Michigan, entered eternal life unexpectedly on Thursday, May 13, 2010. He was 58 years old. He was a Capuchin priest for 40 years.

Daniel Anholzer was born on July 18, 1951 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to Helen (DeLeeuw) Anholzer and the late Robert E. Anholzer. He attended St. Lawrence Seminary, a Capuchin high school, from 1965 to 1969. He entered the Capuchin Order upon his graduation from high school in 1969.

In 1975, Father Dan took a year off from studies to live and work in Nicaragua, later returning for his diaconate ordination at Bocana de Palguas. After ordination he continued serving in Nicaragua, ministering several years, some during the Nicaraguan Civil War. He returned to the United States in 1983 and spent a year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, serving the House of Peace.

Father Dan arrived in Saginaw, Michigan, at St. Joseph "Rainbow Parish" in 1984. St. Joseph's is a church of Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, and Anglo-Saxons. He always encouraged the parishioners to work together as a family. Father Dan ministered at St. Joseph's until his appointment as Provincial Minister and transfer to Detroit in 2002. When Father Dan celebrated his silver jubilee in 1995, he stated, "I am so thankful for my Capuchin vocation. I have become who I am thanks to my Capuchin brothers and mentors. I never would have had all the ethnic and cultural experiences I have had throughout these years' life experiences which have made me more human, whole, and complete."

In 2002, Father Dan was elected to serve as Provincial Minister of the Capuchin Order of St. Joseph, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. He served as Provincial Minister from 2002-2008. Under Father Dan's leadership as Provincial Minister, lay employee formation programs were created to further employee's understanding of the Capuchin charism. He also led the province in the 18 month celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first permanent Capuchin foundation in North America and the establishment of the Province of St. Joseph. He served as president of the North American Pacific Capuchin conference (NAPCC) which represents the provinces of the United States, Australia, Canada, and Guam.

After a year's sabbatical in Asia, Father Dan returned to minister at St. Joseph's in May 2009.

Father Dan is lovingly survived by his mother, Helen Anholzer of Kimberly, Wisconsin; his brothers and sister, Thomas Anholzer and his special friend, Linda Vaughn, Hortonville, Wisconsin; Gary (Mary) Anholzer, Quinney, Wisconsin; and Karen (Fred) Stumpf, Darboy, Wisconsin; and his Nicaraguan sister, Frida (Lee) Adrian; also his nieces and nephews, Kevin and Danielle Santry and their son, Mason; Cole Anholzer and his fiancé, Savannah Bradley; Olivia, Helena and Eric Stumpf; Jason, Marissa and Vanessa Adrian and her fiancé, Brandon Bennett; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
