A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 28, 1861, with Co. E, 87th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Discharged on a surgeon's certificate for a bad knee on February 19, 1863. He then enlisted in York August 13, 1864, with Co. H, 200th Pa Inf, but was again discharged February 22, 1865, on a surgeon's certificate for the same knee problem. For not reporting his condition and previous medical discharge, he lost all bounty, pay, and pension rights for service with the 200th Pa.
