BLUEFIELD — Katherine Peck Carrigan, 92, formerly of North Street, Bluefield, W.Va., died Tuesday May 4, 2010 at Westwood Center in Bluefield, Va.
Born May 28, 1917 in Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late David Kelley Peck and Kathleen Kahle Peck. Mrs. Carrigan was a lifelong resident of Bluefield. She taught in Mercer County Public Schools for many years. She was a lifelong member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was active in the Women of the Church, and was a member of the church choir for 40 years. She was a Presbyterian Missionary in Brazil for five years. Mrs. Carrigan was a member of the D.A.R., Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi and was active in the Bluefield Union Mission Auxiliary.
Katherine Peck married the late Edward M. Carrigan in 1967. After her marriage, she had an instant family of three stepdaughters and four stepsons and many stepgrandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two of her stepsons, Thomas F. Carrigan and Patrick M. Carrigan; one stepdaughter, Anna Marie Carrigan Farnkoff; two sisters, Mary Peck Wheeler (her twin sister) and Rachel P. McClaughterty; and two brothers, David K. Peck and Charles K. Peck.
Survivors include stepchildren, C.E. Carrigan and his wife Gay, Phillip A. Carrigan and his wife Mary, Mary Catherine Carrigan Shea, and special stepdaughter, Loretta Carrigan; special cousins who were raised with her like siblings, Elizabeth Ann Boykin and Tom Lowman; special cousins, Mary Lew Thomas and her husband Hunter Thomas, Jr. and their son, Hunter Thomas, III, C. Brod Hale and his wife Lynn, and Jean Lowman; many stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Friday evening, May 7, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Howard Finkel and the Reverend Tom Lowman from Chester, Va. officiating.
A private burial will be held at Monte Vista Park Cemetery.
