BELLINGHAM -- Donald R. "Don" Burlingame, 68, of Bellingham, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital.
He was the husband of Eleanor F. (Rantala) Burlingame for 43 years.
Born and raised in Worcester, he was the son of the late Harold and Florence (Goslow) Burlingame. He was a 1959 graduate of Commerce High School, and attended Worcester State College, Dean Junior College in Franklin, and Brom's Academy in Worcester. He was a resident of Bellingham for 36 years.
He was owner of Don's Hair Stylists on Dennison Avenue in Framingham from 1966 until he retired in 1994.
He was president of Framingham Cosmetologists Association in 1968, chairman of Framingham Keefe Vocational Advisory Board in 1982 and an advisory board member for the Society of Skin Care Association in 1985. He was president- elect of Massachusetts Cosmetologist Association in 1985, but did not accept the position because of sickness, and was legislative chairman of the association from 1976 to 1980. He was National Hair Stylists/Cosmetologists State Hairdresser of the Year in 1982.
He was very active in the town of Bellingham and other local communities. He was first elected to the Bellingham School Committee in 1982, and reelected for five terms through his 18 years on the board. He was elected as chairman in May 1999, and served in that position four times. He was elected vice chairman five times.
He was chairman of numerous committees during his tenure on the School Committee. He was appointed to the Crisis Management and Health/Safety Committee, chairman of the Grievance Committee of the Housing Authority and a member of the Commission on Disability.
He was a member of the Finance Committee from 1981 until he was elected to the School Committee. He was elected to the Democratic Town Committee for five terms, from 1985 to 1997.
He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Massachusetts Association of School Committees in 1999, and was selected for honorable mention to the MASC All State School Committee in 1997 and 1998.
He was a justice of the peace, and a commissioner to qualify public officers. He was a life member and very active member of the Bellingham Lions.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and seven granddaughters, especially on Cape Cod, where he spent summers for the past 40 years.
He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert S. Burlingame and Donald R. Burlingame Jr. of Upton; a daughter, Linda B. Rosenlund of Worcester; two brothers, Richard Burlingame of South Carolina and Garry Burlingame of Florida; two sisters, Janice Sohlman of Warren and Carol Cunningham of Maine; and seven granddaughters, Sherron and Jaclyn Rosenlund of Worcester, Elizabeth, Sarah, Catherine, Charlotte and Josephine Burlingame, all of Upton.
He was the brother of the late Bruce and Joyce Burlingame and Barbara Canane.
A funeral will take place Saturday, April 26, at 8 a.m., from Cartier's Funeral Home, 151 South Main St., Bellingham, with a Mass of Christian burial, at 9 a.m., in St. Brendan's Church, Hartford Avenue, Bellingham.
Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
Calling hours are Friday, April 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
