As the bombing in London increased both Jean and Joan were evacuated twice, once to the west coast and later to Manchester. In Manchester they were cared for by their father, assigned there as a wartime reserve policeman, while their mother stayed home and ran the news agent business for her dad. After Harry retired from the Air Force they purchased a trailer and went all over the United States along with friends seeing the Grand Canyon, both coasts, and the Canadian border.
