Elizabeth Jane Steele was born in St. Louis, Missouri to James F. Steele and Clarissa Cole Steele. As a child Elizabeth moved with her family from St Louis to Arkansas, traveling by ox and wagon. She married Robert Burton Potts in Bentonville, Arkansas where they established a home. In 1897 they moved to Cherokee Nation (Oklahoma) where they settled on a farm in Oowalla district. Thier sons wife died early and their daughter Mary died at age 23 so Robert and Elizabeth raised three grandchildren. John's son Ernest and Mary's sons Robert and Claude. Robert Burton Potts died in 1929 in Clovis, New Mexico while visiting family and is buried there. Elizabeth remained on the family farm until 1957 when she moved to Chelsea to live with her daughter.

Elizabeth Jane Potts, 97, oldest resident of Chelsea died at 11 a m Tuesday in the Claremore Health Center, where she had been a patient for about a week. She had been in failing health for the past few months. Mrs Potts was born in St Louis Mo, March 13 1868. She moved with her family to Arkansas and in 1898 moved from Benton County to what is now Rogers County, in the old Indian Territory. The family located in Oowalla district where they were numbered among the substantial farmers. Mrs Potts continued to live on the family farm until her 89th birthday, eight years ago, when she moved to Chelsea to make her hone with a daughter, Mrs J S Meacham and Mr Meacham. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Burton Potts, whom she married in 1887, and two children. Mrs Potts was the eldest of five generations in her family. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs Meacham, Mrs H J Bosse of Bayfield, Colorado, and Mrs George Einfeldt, Houston Texas, two granddaughters, four grandsons, 18 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are to be conducted at 3:30, this Thursday afternoon in the First Baptist church by the pastor, Rev Clyde Aikman. Music will be presented by Mrs George Robards, Mrs Bill Victory, Mrs Roy Drae-ger, Mrs Don Schmoll and Mrs F Clyde Aikman, organist. Bearers will be her grandsons, Ernest Elmer, Howard, and Lloyd Potts. Emory Miller and Jim Elam, Honorary bearers, are members of the Odd Fellow Lodge. Burial will be in Ward's Grove cemetery under direction of the Paul Merriott Funeral Service
