Joseph was the 1st husband of my maternal grandmother.

After the Gassmann family moved to the USA various members started to randomly drop the 2nd "n" from the name. There are documents showing that my grandfather was one of the family members who did this.

(his mother, Katarina, also changed the spelling of her first name to Katherine after moving to the USA. Many people did this)

The marriage record shows he used only one "n" at the time making my grandmothers legal last name spelled Gassman. When my mom was born her legal last name was also spelled Gassman.

In the merged info below there is mention of the spelling of his middle name. The spelling Nicolaus is a Latin form so the spelling on his birth certificate is most likely a derivative of that. Growing up I was always told that his middle name was spelled Nicholas. But I have no records to prove that. My middle name is Nicole after my grandfather. I started using it as my first name in 8th grade.

On his WW II draft card he wrote his name as Joseph Nickalas Gassmann. Which does lend merit to the spelling of his middle name on his birth certificate being correct. On his WW II enlistment papers he wrote his name Joseph N. Gassman.

I had just turned 8 and my mom and I were having dinner. My maternal grandmother called. I could tell my mom was not happy with what she was being told. She was telling her mother that she was lying. That she had been drinking and didn't know what she was saying. My mom was having a very hard time accepting that she was being told her dad had just passed away. I remember that night (49 years ago) like it was yesterday. I also remember bits and pieces of the funeral and wake.

Our last visit with him was just a couple weeks prior to his passing.

Cause of death: I was always told it was due to complications of Diabetes.

The info below was merged from a duplicate memorial.

Joseph was my uncle. One of eight siblings in the Gassmann family.

The State of Kansas has his birth certificate as:
Joseph Nickalaus Gassmann
I'm sure it's supposed to be Nicholas.
I will leave it as it is on the birth certificate....for now!
